The first UMTIK conference was organized by MATIMAREN as a national event in Turkish language in 1984 at the Mechanical Engineering Department of the Middle East Technical University (METU), Ankara with a nation-wide participation of Turkish companies and universities. MATIMAREN, Machine Design and Production Research Center (formerly Institute) was initiated in 1979 by a group of faculty in the Mechanical Engineering Department of METU, Ankara, Turkey. The Center aimed to constitute the university-industry cooperation by conducting applied research for industry. The center conducted numerous projects for industry and soon after needed to share this experience and knowledge with other universities and companies by organizing a national conference. This was the idea behind biannual UMTIK conferences which became constitutional and continued without interruption until now.
Starting from the sixth conference in 1994, UMTIK conferences transitioned to an international and bilingual format, continuing to take place on the METU Campus for the subsequent three events. UMTIK 2002 (10th conference) marked a significant shift as it was organized in Cappadocia, making it the first UMTIK conference held outside the METU Campus. Subsequently, UMTIK conferences started traversing Turkey, with UMTIK 2004 in Antalya, UMTIK 2006 in Kuşadası, UMTIK 2008 in Istanbul, UMTIK 2010 at the Northern Cyprus Campus of METU in Güzelyurt, UMTIK 2012 in Denizli-Pamukkale, UMTIK 2014 in İzmir, UMTIK 2016 in Bursa, UMTIK 2018 in Eskişehir, UMTIK 2022 in Cappadocia, and UMTIK 2024 scheduled to be held at Atılım University in Ankara, the modern capital of the Turkish Republic.
The International Program Committee (IPC) is continually updated and expanded each year. UMTIK 2004 introduced a new dimension to the conference format by featuring keynote speakers. UMTIK 2006 pioneered special sessions, with five organized by IPC and Organization Committee (OC) members. IPC became a well-established part of UMTIK conferences starting from UMTIK 2006 in Kuşadası. UMTIK 2008 introduced three new elements: seminars, sponsors' sessions, and a forum on a selected issue. UMTIK 2010 retained these features and added a one-day industrial tutorials program and a parallel workshop primarily addressing industrialists on the first day of the conference. The Organizing Committee traditionally comprises members of MATIMAREN and the faculty of the Mechanical Engineering Department of METU, with a few exceptions. UMTIK 2012 took place in Pamukkale, Denizli, featuring a separate "Machining Day" dedicated to honoring Prof. Dr. Yusuf Altıntaş for his invaluable contributions to metal cutting and machine tools, a tradition planned to continue in 2014, organized by leading professors Dr. Erhan Budak and Dr. İsmail Lazoğlu, as in UMTIK 2012.
UMTIK 2018 hosted a mini-symposium on surface integrity, covering various manufacturing processes, including conventional ones like machining (turning, drilling, milling, grinding, etc.) and non-conventional processes such as ultrasonic machining, chemical machining, electrical-discharge machining, laser-beam machining, additive manufacturing, etc. It also addressed surface treatment processes like shot peening.
Regrettably, UMTIK 2020 could not take place due to the Covid-19 pandemic, during which some esteemed colleagues and distinguished academicians from around the world passed away. Cappadocia University was chosen as the venue for UMTIK 2022 in memory of Professor Memiş Acar, a dedicated member of the UMTIK International Program Committee, who passed on shortly after UMTIK 2018 in Eskişehir. The Organizing Committee decided to dedicate UMTIK 2022 to the memory of Professor Memiş Acar and other esteemed colleagues who made invaluable contributions to UMTIK conferences but are sadly no longer with us.
UMTIK 2024 is set to take place at Atilim University in Ankara, marking the return of UMTIK conferences to Ankara after a long period. This decision honors Professor Metin AKKÖK, one of the founding organizing committee members of UMTIK, who unfortunately passed away on May 11, 2023. Ankara, Metin AKKÖK's hometown, is chosen to commemorate his invaluable contributions and efforts to UMTIK conferences and the Turkish Academy.
